Close to half of Uganda's population lack access to safe water, according to publicised research. According to these findings, distance was regarded as a constraint to access a safe water supply in which over 60% of the rural households reported that they travel about 1.5km or more to access safe water.
Ugandan rural communities are faced with a high risk of being affected by the many water-borne related diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, skin diseases and worms due to the consumption of unsafe open water sources such as run-offs and ditches. In Uganda, 30% of deaths in children under the age of five are simply due to diarrhea.
Our partner, Suubi Community Projects, is based in Kampala. They work in the rural areas of Mukono District, Central Uganda and coordinate projects in Western Uganda. Through an integrated, holistic approach, they are involved in activities to increase access to safe water and sanitation, improve health service delivery, improve education service delivery, and economic empowerment to the communities. Suubi’s mission is to ‘help communities help themselves.’
Our project model is based on the construction of wells within communities, schools and health centres and building partnerships and ownership of the project by the communities through strengthening the capacities of the stakeholders both at the community and institutional level.
The need in Uganda remains huge and we are always overwhelmed with requests from villages and communities wanting a safe water supply. There are many more rural water scarcity communities in urgent need of safe water.
