According to UNDP Myanmar ~ Poverty levels are at an estimated 26% of the population. Poverty is twice as high in rural areas where 70% of the population lives. The remote border areas, mainly populated by Myanmar’s minority ethnic groups, and areas emerging from conflict are particularly poor.

Myanmar is highly susceptible to climate change and extreme weather events, such as the devastating Cyclone Nargis of 2008.  This heightens the risks and vulnerabilities for the rural poor, and particularly women and children and other vulnerable groups, a challenge for which local communities are still unprepared.

The people in the remote communities are uneducated and have insufficient technical skills. In some villages, people are still using rudimentary water movement such as bamboo or carved wood joined together to channel water many kilometres from hillside streams or rivers into their villages. These basic measures don’t last long as they rot and decay quickly and have to be rebuilt regularly.  People also rely on harvesting rainwater from rooves into containers during the wet season.

This project will target two areas (Yeasinma and Taung Khin Yan) in Gangaw Township, Gangaw District, Magway Division. The indigenous people who live in these villages rely on water collection created by their own efforts. Many households cannot afford to construct tanks, but rely on natural resources that are very limited.

Therefore, if this project is funded and implemented the target community people will have sufficient and safe water resulting in healthier lives within the region and state.
