Water and sanitation remains a high priority: just less than half of Tanzanians have somewhere safe and hygienic to go to the toilet, and only 62% of the population have access to an improved water supply.
On average women and children spend over two hours a day collecting water while journeys of six to seven hours are not unusual in some rural areas.
Current Projects
Tanzanite Merelani Maasai Project
The Merelani Maasai people live right in the middle of informal tanzanite mining settlements at the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the only place on earth that the gemstone tanzanite can be found. Squalid shanty town steelements arise around the processing plant tailings where people live in disease ridden poverty. These squalid steelements give rise to some gruesome social problems for the Maasai in the region.
The existing water source is of a very poor quality and is shared by humans and livestock and people have to walk vast distances simply to collect this contaminated water.
The informal shanty towns are populated mostly by men - desperate men. Maasai women have told horror stories of sexual abuse they have encountered on their way to collect water. With HIV/AIDS a big problem in these towns, can result in unwanted pregnancies or worse, the contraction of HIV/AIDS.
The water project seeks to provide the following that will ensure access to water to all people such that they do not have to spend all their day simply collecting water and can utilise their time to progression and future of the country.
- A source of clean and safe water to a number of communities
- Provide a distribution and reticulation system
The impact of this project is likely to affect in the region of 50,500 + people. We are looking for expressions of interest in becoming involved with this project, but be aware this is not a project for the faint hearted. Express your interest to info@bridgitwater.org and make a difference to the Tanzanian Maasai people.
